The top competitive eaters in the world now know the date when they will face off for the title of world hamburger-eating champion.  Announced today, the  Krystal Square Off V World Hamburger Eating Championship will take place on September 28, 2008, and will once again be held along the banks of the Tennessee River in downtown Chattanooga, Tenn. A major in the sport of competitive eating, Krystal Square Off V is the only world hamburger-eating championship sanctioned by Major League Eating.

Last year, Krystal Square Off IV attracted a live audience of more than 10,000 people to the Chattanooga Riverfront where they witnessed Joey Chestnut devour 103 Krystal burgers in eight minutes. Chestnut’s mark shattered the previous world-record of 97 Krystals set by three-time Krystal Square Off champion Takeru Kobayashi in 2006.

With Kobayashi back to reclaim his throne and eaters like “Humble” Bob Shoudt, Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas, Pat “Deep Dish” Bertoletti and Tim “Eater X” Janus gaining ground on the two eating legends, Krystal Square Off V is expected to draw competitive eating fans from all across North America and as far away as Japan to watch firsthand what many now refer to as the Super Bowl of competitive eating.

On top of the excitement provided by the sport’s top tier of professionals, it will now become easier for amateur hopefuls across the South to qualify for the nationally-televised Krystal Square Off and compete against the world’s best. All details of the revamped Krystal Square Off Qualifying Tour, including how to qualify, will be announced shortly along with the prize purse for Krystal Square Off V.

Portion Size In The Restaurant Industry

right priceChainleader.com writer Lane Cardwell recently posted an interesting story about the restaurant industry and portion size trends. In particular, Cardwell discusses T.G.I.Friday’s Right Portion, Right Price Menu, which the chain debuted almost a year ago.

According to Cardwell (and everyone else in the industry), Friday’s took a huge risk in “offering menu items that are one third smaller for one third less price”. While this may seem like a no-brainer, apparently it was a crazy move by Friday’s.

In fact, the restaurant chain issued a press release in May on the anniversary of the Right Portion menu addition which said, “A year ago, the industry thought we were nuts when we announced smaller portions at lower prices across the menu, all day every day. They said it was a crazy idea and it would not work.”

The post goes on to describe how industry insiders reacted when Friday’s first made the announcement a year ago and how smaller chains are finally jumping on the bandwagon. It’s an interesting read, and you can check out the entire article here.

Thankfully portion size has never been an issue for Krystal.

Krystal Square Off “Super Bowl of Competitive Eating,” Says Top Eater

Humble Bob Shouldt at the 2007 Krystal Square Off

    Courtesy of KrystalSquareOff.com:

The Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, which takes place this Friday, July 4, is often referred to as “The Super Bowl of Competitive Eating,” but if you ask champion competitive eater “Humble” Bob Shoudt what he thinks, he’ll say the Krystal Square Off World Hamburger Eating Championship is the competition most eaters consider to be the “big one.”

“My focus is on the Super Bowl of competitive eating - the Krystal Square Off V,” Shoudt told the Philadelphia Inquirer, just moments after qualifying for the Nathan’s finals. “This is the contest that most competitive eaters agree is the big one.”

The fifth-ranked eater in the world, Shoudt finished second at last year’s Krystal Square Off World Championship, consuming 95 Krystal hamburgers in eight minutes and finishing just behind the number-one ranked eater in the world Joey Chestnut, whose mark of 103 Krystal burgers established a new world record.

With Chestnut looking to repeat as champion and three-time Krystal Square Off champion Takeru Kobayashi, whose personal record is 97 Krystal burgers, back in the mix, the top spots will be hotly contested at this year’s nationally televised championship. The Krystal Square Off V takes place at The Chattanooga Riverfront this fall, with the exact date to be announced here soon.

Krystal’s new Banana and Strawberry Freeze
Even though it’s Monday, today is a great day. Not only are we are coming to you from Florida’s Emerald Coast (a little family vacay trip), but two new Krystal Freeze flavors debut today.

The new flavors are Banana and Strawberry and they’re sure to be the perfect summertime treat.

Like all Krystal Freezes, the two new flavors are made using premium syrups which contain only pure cane sugar, ensuring a refreshing and natural flavor.

And just in case you can’t decide which flavor you want to try first, don’t worry, Krystal suggests mixing the two and making a Strawberry-Banana Freeze.

In fact, that sounds so good we’re heading out to our nearest Krystal now to grab one so that we can sip it by the beach.

    Friday Photo

    The Hamburger Harley
Our photo for Friday is of the Hamburger Harley owned by no, not the Hamburglar, but Harry Sperl of Daytona Beach, Fla.

Obviously Sperl is a burger enthusiast and in addition to the Harley, he owns over 1,000 pieces of burger odds and ends.

According to DVICE.com, where we originally found this photo, Sperl has also “tricked out a car to turn it into the ‘Good Burger Mobile,’ and has been collecting burger related items for nearly a decade.

    Please Drink Your MilkQuake Responsibly

Photo by Flickr user Alison Chains'.
Seeing how temperatures are already soaring into the 90s here in Krystal Country, we know many of you are turning to icy beverages to help you cool down (us included).

And while we’ve warned you about what can happen while slurping down a Krystal Freeze or MilkQuake too quickly, we thought we’d share this story about brain freeze, which provides some recent research as well as a scientific look at the painful condition.

Remember - please drink your MilkQuakes and Krystal Freezes responsibly.
